History

The CRSI Foundation began in 1981 by a small group of individual leaders dedicated to strengthening the future of the reinforced concrete construction industry through philanthropy.  It began by raising money annually to fund academic scholarships for students who were likely to pursue a career in this field.

Over time, small endowments were created for long-term sustainability.  The impact expanded beyond scholarships to include research and development (R&D) projects that improved the strength, design and capacity of rebar while increasing the safety of our industry’s employees.

Today, the CRSI Foundation has multiple endowed scholarship funds, a strong annual fund, and has created valuable partnerships with many companies and individuals who, together, advance the Foundation’s mission.

Structure

The CRSI Foundation is a nonprofit charitable organization that enjoys tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Tax Code. It is governed by 15 person volunteer Board of Directors and supported by other volunteers that serve on various committees.

The Foundation operates on a calendar fiscal year and is audited by an independent audit firm annually.

Financial Focus

The Foundation is focused on increasing the assets held in the endowment while maintaining a level of scholarship and grant distributions that is sustainable over time.  Investment proceeds from the endowment and annual fundraising from individual and corporate supporters are the two main revenue sources.

From 2016 to 2022, the Foundation distributed $222,590 in scholarships and $718,000 in research grants.  In the same period, the Foundation raised $1,640,334 and spent $231,445 on fundraising related expenses. As of 11/30/22, assets were $3,037,604.
